Work summary
The aerodynamic and aeroelastic problems reported for large wind turbines are believed to be manageable by established aerospace technology available at NLR. The study aims at validating NLR’s computational fluid dynamics (CFD) algorithms for wind turbine flow. The experimental database, used for the validation, is obtained from the MEXICO test, which has been performed in the DNW wind tunnel.

My assignment is to determine the effect of the y+ value with the use of wall functions in RANS-calculations on the resistance and flow for a KVLCC2 tanker. This is done with the CFD-solver ReFRESCO, developed by MARIN. A grid-study has been performed with grids made with GridPro. Grids are also made with Hexpress to verify the solutions.

Based on an idea of my own I developed a tool and proposed it to the company. The tool is possible to automate processes and decrease the time for data-input with more than 92%. After positive feedback the tool was spread to other countries worldwide. After that other projects were given to me and I developed more tools to decrease the time for data-input and automate more processes.
